jan’s head was pounding. He had the startling compulsion to hurl something. But forcefully redecorating the place wouldn’t make a difference.

Had he really said those words? Called her a responsibility? An obligation? A burden―

No! That last one had come out of her mouth. But every word had been a double-edged blade, cutting him in return.

She was right to run. He was such an ass. He had no right to scold her. He was a hypocrite for restricting her to blood bags when he was the one unwilling to kick his addiction. Tapping a vein was so much better.

But his paranoia kept that experience from her.

As well as his jealousy. He didn’t want her to drink from anyone other than him.

If she did, would she develop a taste for it?

Eve was nothing like Andromeda. His Greek beauty had become something entirely different following her transition. Right from the start, there had been this strength of will in Eve that he hadn’t given her credit for. She wasn’t a killer. She was in full control of her hunger, if not of her body’s other urges.

And he couldn’t fault her for it because he was depriving her of that too. Of experiencing things with her new body. Her heightened senses.

What if she didn’t come back? Would he start the cycle over?

His hand closed around the bullet at his neck. It was a vicious cycle, wasn’t it? And it repeated itself over and over again, like with the last innocent girl who crossed his path. Anne had loved him so much that she had taken her own life to force his hand after he had refused to turn her. He had broken her heart too. Shattered it with a stake through her chest. Chaining her up, nailing her into a box, and sinking it to the bottom of the ocean had been just another obligation. A responsibility he had to the world to protect it from the monster he created.

And that was when the migraines started. A withdrawal symptom, courtesy of his bonding with Andromeda. 178 years he had devoted to her, and 122 later, he was still suffering for it.

Clutching his head, Kjan paced by his bed. That Falling in Reverse song was playing in his head again, a personal theme to his life, the lyrics shouting and bouncing around in his skull like little grenades.

With his own Popular Monster taking over, he couldn’t put the panic attack back in its box. The ceiling and walls were shrinking on him. The penthouse was becoming suffocatingly smaller by the second. Inside of his skin, he was screaming.

It happened so fast, starting with the ominous prickle in the roots of his hair and spreading down his body to the tips of his fingers. Falling to his knees, he couldn’t stop the inhale, that inevitable draw of electricity pulling inward, his muscles trembling. Sparks coiled up his hands, then around his flexed forearms.

The empty, black pit in his stomach gorged itself on the energy of the building’s power lines, leaving him to suffer the aftermath of the binge.
